HPHT vs. CVD
Lab-grown diamonds are diamonds that are created in a laboratory setting using advanced technological processes that mimic the natural diamond-forming process. In this process, a substrate (such as a small diamond seed or a piece of silicon carbide) is placed in a vacuum chamber and subjected to high temperatures (around 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit). As the substrate is heated, a gas mixture of methane and hydrogen is introduced into the chamber. The gases react with the substrate, causing a thin layer of carbon atoms to deposit on the substrate, which eventually crystallize into a diamond.
Both the HPHT and CVD methods can produce high-quality lab-grown diamonds that are chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural diamonds.
